Opening a second venue is one of the most exciting milestones in a music school's growth. It means demand is outstripping your current capacity, you're reaching new families, and your school is becoming a genuine local institution.
It's also the moment when scheduling stops being a puzzle and starts being a rubik's cube in the dark.
A single-location school has one timetable, one set of rooms, and teachers who stay put. A multi-location school has parallel timetables that need to be coordinated, teachers who may move between sites, rooms with different configurations at each venue, and parents who might not know (or care) that your school operates from more than one address. Everything that was manageable at one site becomes exponentially harder at two.

The golden rule: block scheduling by location
The single most effective principle for multi-location scheduling is this: assign teachers to locations in blocks, not individual lessons.
This means Teacher A teaches at Venue 1 every Monday and Tuesday, and at Venue 2 every Wednesday and Thursday. Not Monday morning at Venue 1, Monday afternoon at Venue 2, Tuesday at Venue 1 again.
Block scheduling solves three problems simultaneously:
Travel time disappears within the teaching day. A teacher who's at one venue all afternoon doesn't need transit time between lessons. They arrive, teach their full block, and leave. No rushing between sites, no late arrivals because of traffic, no dead time spent driving instead of teaching.
Room allocation is simpler. If Teacher A is always at Venue 1 on Mondays, their room at Venue 1 can be allocated for the entire Monday. There's no need to juggle room assignments based on which teacher is at which venue at which hour.
Parents get consistency. Families learn that their child's lesson is always at Venue 1 on Tuesdays. They don't need to check which venue this week — it's always the same place on the same day.
The only exception to block scheduling should be specialist teachers who are only needed for a few hours at each location (e.g., a drum teacher who teaches 4 hours at Venue 1 on Monday and 3 hours at Venue 2 on Tuesday). Even then, keep them at one venue per day.
Teacher allocation across sites
Deciding which teachers work at which locations involves balancing several factors:
Demand by instrument at each venue. If Venue 1 has a long waitlist for piano but Venue 2 has spare piano capacity, you need more piano teaching time at Venue 1. Match teacher allocation to demand, not convenience.
Teacher preferences and proximity. A teacher who lives 5 minutes from Venue 1 and 40 minutes from Venue 2 is a natural fit for Venue 1 as their primary site. Respecting proximity reduces travel costs (if you reimburse) and makes teachers more likely to stay.
Coverage and redundancy. If only one teacher covers a particular instrument at each venue, a single illness wipes out that instrument's lessons for the day.
